Facebook Group Celebrates Drunk Young Women

A Facebook group that features photos and videos of women getting drunk has attracted more than 172,000 members and about 5,000 photos, CNN reported Dec. 10.

The group, dubbed “Thirty Reasons Girls Should Call it a Night,” shows young women passing out, vomiting, urinating in public, and drunkenly carousing. The group is part discussion forum, part bulletin board.

Most posters aren’t shy about their exploits, no matter how embarrassing: many include their full names and the colleges they attend. Concern that parents, teachers, or future employers might see the photos seem to be far from their minds. “It’s just something fun to do,” said one moderator of the group, who didn’t want to be identified. “You need to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes.”

“You can’t overstate how unthinking these kids are at 18, 19, 20 years old,” said Robert L. Carothers, president of the University of Rhode Island. “They’re not a thoughtful bunch, by and large.”

The site moderator, who has posted unflattering photos of herself on the site, admitted to some worry about a possible impact on her ability to get a job after graduation. “I know an employer won’t [realize] I know how to separate work and personal time, and I have no intentions of being wrapped around a toilet at a job,” she said.

Another member — who identified herself as Laura, age 22 – took her photos down after a reporter from CNN called. She also changed her MySpace page from public to private after her parents saw a posted video showing her drinking.

“It’s good [my parents] saw it,” she said. “It’s better they saw it than a potential employer.”
