Cancer Treatments from the Garden?

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Forget drugs. New research shows there’s potential to fight cancer naturally. The studies show that a black raspberry-based gel is successful for oral cancer and that two natural drinks could be helpful for colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. All of the research was presented at the American Association for Cancer Research’s Sixth Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research held this week.

The first study focused on oral squamous cell carcinoma. It’s a deadly cancer that can leave permanent disfigurement. A clinical trial found a topically applied black raspberry gel prevents and slows down the malignant transformation of precancerous oral lesions. Black raspberries are full of anthocyanins which appear to have a role in silencing cancerous cells. One big benefit of the gel is there are no side effects from using it.

Another research study finds a nutrition drink reduces the growth of tumors in a mouse model of human prostate cancer by 25 percent in two weeks. The drink is Blueberry Punch. It is made up of fruit concentrates, grape seed, skin extracts, citrus skin extracts, green tea extracts, olive leaf, olive pulp extracts, tarragon, turmeric and ginger. Researchers say the combination of these ingredients is effective at suppressing cell growth and from their research they believe Blueberry Punch should be studied in human clinical trials for prostate cancer.

The third study presented focused on green tea and the prevention of the growth of colorectal tumors in a rat model. Study authors say while previous research has been inconsistent, this latest study finds rats fed a diet containing Polyphenon E are less than half as likely to develop colon cancer. They hope this research will pave the way for human clinical trials as well.
