Crib Bumpers Called Too Risky
Saturday, April 21st, 2007ST. LOUIS, Sept. 21 — The value of bumper pads on baby cribs as a cushion against bumps and bruises may be outweighed by the small risk of death, researchers said. Action Points
Explain to interested patients that bumper pads for cribs and bassinets may help prevent minor injuries at the cost of a small risk of death.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that if parents do use a bumper pad that it be “thin, firm, well-secured, and not pillow-like.”
Over the past 20 years, 27 bumper-related suffocation and strangulation deaths have been reported in a national database, said Bradley T. Thach, M.D., of Washington University here, and colleagues, in the September issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
EASD: Moderate Wine Drinking Lowers Fasting Glucose in Type 2 Diabetes
Saturday, April 21st, 2007AMSTERDAM, Sept. 20 — A glass of merlot or perhaps sauvignon blanc with dinner may offer modest benefits for patients with type 2 diabetes, said researchers here.Action Points
Explain to patients that the study was small, and that further study is needed to determine whether the effects the authors saw would hold up in a larger population.
Note, too, that the study was published as an abstract and presented at a conference. The data and conclusions should be considered to be preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
In a small study, teetotalers with confirmed type 2 diabetes who agreed to drink a 150 mL (five ounce) glass of wine with dinner daily for three months had modest but significant reductions (P =0.015) in fasting plasma glucose compared with controls who drank non-alcoholic diet beer, reported Iris Shai, Ph.D., of Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel, and colleagues.

Two Deaths Prompt FDA Meningitis Alert on Cochlear Implants
Wednesday, April 11th, 2007ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 11 — The FDA has alerted physicians to the need for children with cochlear implants to be fully immunized against bacterial meningitis, citing two recent deaths that might have been prevented.
In a public Men’s health notice, the FDA said there was an increased life-threatening risk of bacterial meningitis in cochlear implant recipients caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, particularly those children with implants that have a positioner.
Only one cochlear implant has a position and that device was withdrawn from the market in July 2002.
VIAGRA PLUS TESTOSTERONE SOLUTION FOR ANDROPAUSE
Saturday, April 7th, 2007What is commonly known as mid life crisis may have a proper scientific explanation? Scientists are thinking of this loss of interest as something similar to female menopause. Similar to menopause in females, men also face a similar situation in their sexual life. This is known as andropause. But the main difference between menopause and andropause is that while menopause is inevitable, andropause can be retarded.
Before we come to how viagra provides solution for andropause let us first discuss what andropause is and how it affects a man’s sexual life. Andropause is characterized by decreased testosterone levels as men grow older. Andropause has no fix time and can happen to males ranging from thirty to seventy years of age. It also does not have any clear signal to mark the onset of andropause. In most of the cases andropause set in very slowly and may be accompanied by mood swings and other physical problems.
FDA Announces Use of Codeine Products by Some Breastfeeding MothersMay Lead to Life-Threatening Side Effects in Nursing Babies
Friday, April 6th, 2007MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program
ROCKVILLE, Md., Aug. 17, 2007–FDA issued a Public Health Advisory with important new information about a very rare, but serious, side effect in nursing infants whose mothers are taking codeine and are ultra-rapid metabolizers of codeine. When codeine enters the body and is metabolized, it changes to morphine, which relieves pain. Many factors affect codeine metabolism, including a person’s genetic make-up. Some people have a variation in a liver enzyme and may change codeine to morphine more rapidly and completely than other people. Nursing mothers taking codeine may also have higher morphine levels in their breast milk. These higher levels of morphine in breast milk may lead to life-threatening or fatal side effects in nursing babies. In most cases, it is unknown if someone is an ultra-rapid codeine metabolizer.
