Menstrual Cycle Confusion
Monday, October 8th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — No more periods — Itâs something that interests more than two-thirds of women, but many of those women are confused about whether or not it is safe, according to new research. The study also shows doctors are not talking to their patients about this option.
Oral contraceptives were initially designed to mimic the body so that one week of tablets is not active and the woman would have withdrawal bleeding that mimics a period. But if a woman skips the week of inactive tablets and just stays on the active tablets, a woman can essentially âskipâ her period. The FDA recently approved the first continuous oral contraceptive. But researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found there is a gap between physician and patient understanding about menstrual suppression.

Impotence drugs such as viagra may do more than help men physically have sex — they may also boost levels of a hormone linked with feelings of love, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. viagra, known generically as sildenafil, raised levels of the hormone oxytocin in rats, the team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said in a report published in the Journal of Physiology. Photo This hormone is involved in nursing and childbirth but also in orgasm and feelings of sexual pleasure.
Docs Need More Face Time with Teens
Friday, September 7th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — The new HPV vaccine could be a good way for doctors to spend more quality time with their teenaged patients.
Researchers who studied doctor visits among teenagers — both insured and uninsured — report most teens don’t go to the doctor often enough to complete the three-shot HPV series, which is recommended to be delivered over six months. The vaccine, which protects against the sexually transmitted virus known to cause most cases of cervical cancer, went on the market this year.
“In order to be best protected against HPV, teens need all three shots before they are exposed to the virus,” study author Cynthia Rand, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, was quoted as saying. “Even if we stretch the shots out over 24 months instead of six and include check-up[s] and sick visit[s] as opportunities to vaccinate, only about a third of girls and a fifth of boys are seeing their doctors enough to receive all the shots.”

World AIDS Day – Struggles in Developing Countries
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â Serious struggles in developing countries mark this World AIDS Day.
One new study shows men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of AIDS in developing countries. While in most developed countries the issue has been publicly discussed and addressed, MSM lay low in most low and middle-income countries, mainly because of laws against homosexuality.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University looked at studies that had reported HIV prevalence in 38 low and middle-income countries in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Eastern Europe. They found an increased level of risk in MSM regardless of the countriesâ income level or the amount of illicit drug use. Overall, MSM are about 20 times more likely to be infected with HIV than the general population.

Women Less Likely than Men to Receive ICDs
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Women do not get the same treatment as men to protect them from sudden cardiac death — the leading cause of death in the United States.
A new report shows men are about two- to three-times more likely than women to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to prevent sudden cardiac death.
The risk of sudden cardiac death overall increases with age and is higher in men than in women but the sex difference narrows and eventually disappears after age 85 years. Research has shown ICDs to be effective in preventing sudden cardiac death. Medicare coverage of the devices has expanded but many eligible patients still do not receive them.
