Senate to act on Indian Health Service funding

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Washington — The Senate is poised to vote on new funding for the Indian Health Service that includes plans to combat a doctor shortage. But President Bush says he would veto it over cost and Medicaid documentation concerns.

The Indian Health Care Improvement Act of 2007 would authorize $35 billion from 2008 through 2017 for the IHS. The bill would establish doctor retention and recruitment bonuses of up to $25,000 and fund demonstration programs to recruit new physicians to the IHS. The agency’s physician vacancy rate is currently 13%. The measure also would:

Post Traumatic Stress Is a Risk Factor for Chronic Disease

Friday, February 15th, 2008

(Ivanhoe Newswire)  Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are just as likely to have long term health problems as people with chronic disease risk factors like high white blood cell counts.  However, very few healthcare providers screen PTSD patients for these biological markers.

“Exposure to trauma has not only psychological effects, but it can take a serious toll on a person’s health status and biological function as well,” said Geisinger Health Systems Senior Investigator Joseph Boscarino, PhD, MPH.  “PTSD is a risk factor for disease that doctors should put on their radar screens.”

Bush budget cuts hospital funding but silent on Medicare doctor pay

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Washington — President Bush’s fiscal 2009 health budget, with steep Medicare spending cuts as a main highlight, sets the stage for a tough fight with Congress in the months ahead.

The proposal, part of a wider $3.1 trillion plan, is just the first step in this year’s health care budget debate. Health care organizations and congressional Democrats have found a lot not to like. Bush proposes reducing Medicare and Medicaid spending anticipated under current law by $196 billion over five years, with hospitals as the main target. The plan would do nothing to prevent Medicare physician payment cuts.

Pacemakers and iPods do mix After all

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — A well-publicized report suggesting iPods may interfere with cardiac pacemakers is being debunked by a new study.

The report stemmed from the case of one man who became dizzy after listening to his iPod. When cardiologists tested the iPod during the man’s examination, they found it did interfere with his pacemaker. The report was published, and calls for warning labels on portable music and video devices ensued.

Bulletproof bylaws: Maintaining the right to protect doctors — and patients

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Before joining the medical staff at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce, Fla., pathologist Anil G. Desai, MD, spent two years sitting in on meetings to learn what goes into the bylaws that he says ultimately safeguard patient care.

“The capability, the knowledge and the expertise is with the physicians,” said Dr. Desai, who serves on Lawnwood’s medical executive committee and has been a medical staff member since 2001. The bylaws “are the only way you can take care of patient care independently. Who will be the advocate of the patient if the medical staff is not there?”

State of the Union message: Bush seeks insurance tax deduction

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Washington — President Bush used his last State of the Union speech to restate his existing health care proposals, including tax deductions for health insurance spending, health insurance pools for businesses, medical liability reform and wider use of health information technology. Bush also challenged Congress to address the long-term solvency of entitlement programs, such as Medicare.

Reaction to the president’s speech was muted. With Bush offering no significant new proposals for what could be a very partisan election year in Congress, medical organizations took the opportunity to restate their goals and concerns.

GlaxoSmithKline Arixtra found effective

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Studies of the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) drug Arixtra (fondaparinux sodium) have found it to be effective. Artemis (Arixtra for Thromboembolism prevention in a Medical Indications Study) found the treatment reduced the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) by 46.7 per cent.

Dr Alexander Cohen, of King’s College Hospital London and chairman of the Artemis steering committee, said: “VTE presents a significant risk to this patient population, however we have had limited understanding of the effectiveness of clot prevention to address VTE in this group. “These results show that Arixtra is an effective and well tolerated treatment that can reduce the risk of VTE for these patients, further helping us to define the role of anti-thrombotics in this setting.” Dr Lawson Macartney, of GSK, added: “GSK is excited about these results that support Arixtra in the treatment of this population, and may help to expand the application of Arixtra in clinical practice.”
