New law expands FDA monitoring, funds
Monday, October 15th, 2007Washington — Long-awaited resources to help the Food and Drug Administration more closely monitor the safety and effectiveness of the nation’s pharmaceuticals and medical devices will begin to flow as a result of a comprehensive new law signed Sept. 27 by President Bush.
The Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 reauthorizes the Prescription Drug User Fee Act, the Medical Device User Fee Act and laws that govern the safety of children’s drugs and devices.
Treating Painful Bladder Syndrome
Friday, October 12th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — As of 1997, 183 different types of therapies have been used to treat painful-bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC). These have included dietary, pharmacologic, and behavioral therapies. But how well do they really work?
A new study analyzed data of 1,470 adult patients from 21 randomized trials on treatments for PBS/IC. It revealed pentosan polysulfate, sold under the brand name Elmiron, modestly helped the symptoms of the disease. But there was not enough evidence on other drug treatments.
Researchers say evaluating the effectiveness of the treatments was challenging, partly because most of the trials were short — a mean duration of 15 weeks.
PhRMA study finds success in Medicare Part D
Monday, October 8th, 2007Washington — Seniors who did not have prescription drug coverage before enrolling in Medicare’s drug benefit filled nearly twice as many prescriptions and cut their out-of-pocket costs nearly in half after signing up, according to a new report sponsored by drug manufacturers.
The study compared drug use and spending in the year before the benefit with use and spending in the benefit’s first year among tens of thousands of seniors who had no drug coverage before Part D began. Beneficiaries in this group filled an average of 1.7 prescriptions per month in 2005. The figure jumped to 3.3 prescriptions per month after the benefit launched in 2006, found the analysis, commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.
Medicaid Rx pad security rule is delayed
Monday, October 8th, 2007Washington — Physicians and pharmacists now have six more months to prepare for a law requiring many Medicaid prescriptions to be written on tamper-resistant pads.
Congress adopted the delay in late September. President Bush signed the measure Sept. 29 — two days before the new law was to take effect.

Washington state doctors lead their own quality appraisal
Thursday, September 20th, 2007Fresh from its battle against a local health plan’s performance-based network, the Washington State Medical Assn. is close to issuing confidential reports that will allow physician members to examine how their quality measures up against their peers and best practice.
The Physician led Quality Improvement Program, or QUIP, is scheduled to deliver its first quarterly report in November. The report will include patient-identified pharmacy and claims data from public and private payers and will measure physician performance on clinical metrics for diabetes, cardiology, antibiotic use, depression, preventive care and asthma.
