Flexibility in the Workplace Leads to Healthier Employees
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — One of the main excuses that people use to not exercise is they donât have the time. But if they had the time, would they really take on Men’s healthier habits? A new study says yes. The study finds those who have flexible work lives do in fact have Men’s healthier lifestyles.
For the study, researcher from Wake Forest University School of Medicine interviewed employees from a large multinational pharmaceutical company. The company is often recognized as one of the most family friendly places to work by Working Mother magazine. The company believes in flexibility by offering compressed workweeks, flextime, job sharing and remote or telework. Employees from all departments were included in the studyâ not just high level office workers.
FDA eyes “behind the counter” drug category with greater clinical role for pharmacists
Monday, December 10th, 2007The Food and Drug Administration is contemplating the establishment of a class of medications that would be available only after counseling from a pharmacist but without a physician’s prescription. Physicians widely oppose the development, arguing that it could disrupt continuity of care and put patients at risk.
“We’re concerned about patient safety,” said Rebecca J. Patchin, MD, an American Medical Association trustee. “If a medication requires oversight, it should be available by prescription, and a physician should be involved in prescribing it and monitoring the patient.” The AMA testified in opposition to this action at the FDA’s Nov. 14 hearing on the subject.

This is Your Brain on Addiction
Thursday, December 6th, 2007
By Leslie Miller, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent
AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — What does addiction do to the inside of a personâs brain? New research is providing important new clues that could one day lead to new medications to treat people who are addicted to drugs like cocaine and heroin, alcohol and even cigarettes.
Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at Duke University Medical Center, has done extensive research in this area. She says studies of rats, monkeys and human patients offer new insight into how drugs change the chemistry and structure of the brain, and interfere with its normal function.

New Technology to Test Live Toxicity of Drugs
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â One of the main reasons that drugs are pulled off the market is because of liver toxicity. The problem is researchers have no way to accurately measure how the liver will respond to drugs. In the past, they have relied on liver cells from rats, but they do not always respond the same as human liver cells. Now, researchers from MIT have created tiny colonies of living human liver cells that model the full-sized organ.
In order to build these model livers, MIT researchers use micropatterning technology. This is the same technology used to place tiny copper on computer chips. Essentially, the technology precisely arranges human liver cells on a plate. Because the cells are arranged so precisely, the micro-liver mimics the behavior of a human liver.

States Missing Out on Proven Drug for Alcoholics
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â State Medicaid policies may be keeping many alcoholics from being treated with an inexpensive drug known to battle the condition.
Studies have shown the prescription drug naltrexone can help problem drinkers sober up â even if it is used without any counseling or other form of support. But a new study suggests many states have such restrictive drug policies alcoholics are unable to get or afford the medication.
âWe know from extensive research that only about 6 percent of people diagnosed as alcohol dependent are getting medication during their treatment and about a third of those who do not get medication cite cost or insurance as the key barrier,â study author Carolyn Heinrich, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was quoted as saying. âRevising certain state policies on prescription drugs is one way to address what is clearly a need for greater access to a clinically-proven and cost-effective treatment.â
Rx managers pushing to include e-prescribing in Medicare pay bill
Monday, November 19th, 2007Washington — A war of words escalated earlier this month when a group of pharmacy benefit managers increased the pressure on Congress to pass what the American Medical Association warned would be a costly Medicare electronic prescribing requirement for physicians.
The Pharmaceutical Care Management Assn. since the summer has been pushing lawmakers to include an e-prescribing mandate in any legislation to prevent next year’s 10.1% Medicare physician pay cut. Now the PCMA has launched a tough television and print advertising campaign.
House to offer bill for registry of drug firm gifts to doctors
Monday, November 19th, 2007Washington — A U.S. House lawmaker plans to introduce legislation to create a registry in which pharmaceutical manufacturers would have to report any gifts that are given to physicians.
The measure by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D, Ore.) would be similar to legislation that already was offered in the Senate. But the House bill might apply to companies with less than $100 million in revenues, the threshold set by the Senate bill, said Ed Hill, a legislative assistant for DeFazio. The House and Senate bills would require manufacturers to list both gifts of $25 or more and the physicians who received them.
