ICAAC: Mice Fare Better Than Men In Novel TB Regimen
Friday, April 20th, 2007CHICAGO, Sept. 19 — When it comes to curing TB quickly, it may be better to be a mouse than a man. Action Points
Explain to interested patients that researchers have been trying to tweak the gold standard regimen for TB therapy in the hope of speeding up the cure, which now takes about six months.
Note that research presented here shows that some regimen changes that worked in mice don’t appear to work in humans, although other alterations have a benefit.
This study was published as an abstract and presented orally at a conference. These data and conclusions should be considered to be preliminary until they have been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
ICAAC: Integrase Inhibitor Effective for HIV Patients with Multi-drug Resistant Disease
Friday, April 20th, 2007CHICAGO, Sept. 18 — The investigative integrase inhibitor raltegravir (Isentress) suppresses the viral load to undetectable levels in at least half of HIV patients with virus resistant to three drug classes, researchers said here.
All doses of raltegravir were superior to an optimized background of available antiretrovirals, Jose Gatell, M.D., of the University of Barcelona, told attendees at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Action Points
Explain to interested patients that optimized background medication remains important for treatment of HIV-infected patients.

FDA Okays Broader Use for Sitagliptin (Januvia) in Type 2 Diabetes

Chinese Herbs Ease Menstrual Cramps Better than NSAIDs

Explain to interested patients that the study supports a benefit from Chinese herbal medicines in treating menstrual cramps.
Caution patients that the relatively low quality of the studies in the meta-analysis did not allow the researchers to make any recommendation for use of Chinese herbal medicine in treating menstrual cramps.

[…] the effects of naturopathic botanical and dietary interventions on sex steroid hormone metabolism in premenopausal women.
Saturday, April 14th, 2007A pilot and feasibility study on the effects of naturopathic botanical and dietary interventions on sex steroid hormone metabolism in premenopausal women.: Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2007 Aug;16(8):1601-9 Authors: Greenlee H, Atkinson C, Stanczyk FZ, Lampe JW
Naturopathic physicians commonly make dietary and/or dietary supplement recommendations for breast cancer prevention. This placebo-controlled, parallel-arm, pilot study tested the effects of two naturopathic interventions over five menstrual cycles on sex steroid hormones and metabolic markers in 40 (more…)
Adenovirus Picture Clarified by New Technique
Thursday, April 12th, 2007IOWA CITY, Iowa, Oct. 12 — A new picture of adenoviruses and the disease associated with them in the U.S. is emerging from a novel molecular technique, according to researchers here.Action Points
Explain to interested patients that adenoviruses - long thought to be relatively innocuous - have in recent years been associated with conditions ranging from chronic airway obstruction to obesity.
Note that identifying adenoviruses is usually done by a process that can take several weeks.
Explain that this study describes the results of an epidemiological survey of adenoviruses done using a novel molecular technique that is considerably faster.

IDSA: Rotavirus Infection, Not Just for Kids
Wednesday, April 11th, 2007SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11 — Rotavirus infection, once considered almost exclusively a pediatric diarrheal disease, affects adults as well, causing substantial morbidity and unnecessary use of procedures and antibiotics, according to results of a study reported here. Action Points
Explain to interested patients that a virus that causes diarrhea in children is also seen in adults.
Point out the association between contact with children and infection in adults and the role of immunosupression.
Note that the findings were reported at a medical conference and as a published abstract and should be considered preliminary until they have appeared in a peer-reviewed journal.
