Calif. Court Says Police Must Return Medical Marijuana

Friday, December 7th, 2007

California’s Fourth District Court of Appeal has ruled that police need to return marijuana seized from medical users if drug charges against them have been dropped, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Nov. 30.

Police, prosecutors and local governments had argued that it would condone drug use, interfere with federal law enforcement, and possible expose police to prosecution on drug charges if they were forced to return seized marijuana. But the court cited California’s medical-marijuana law in ordering that seized marijuana be returned to its rightful owners.

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Washington — An attempt to quickly pass a Senate health information technology bill was derailed after medical groups raised concerns about its quality measurement, patient privacy and funding provisions.

Senators in mid-November considered but could not agree on “hotlining” the bill, a term for passing it by unanimous consent without formal floor debate, said Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee spokesman Michael Mahaffey.

Physicians challenge lawyers’ meritless liability suits — and win

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Physicians say a series of favorable court rulings is turning the tide in their crusade against frivolous medical liability lawsuits.

Three Ohio courts in six months sanctioned plaintiff lawyers for pursuing unsupported claims against three doctors. Judges awarded the physicians their legal expenses. In New Orleans, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a similar award to a Mississippi doctor Nov. 13.

Measuring out medicine (book excerpt: The Surgeons: Life and Death in a Top Heart Center)

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

While the match is made by a computer, the decision whether someone actually gets on a list, and his medical urgency classification, is made by local transplant committees. At Columbia-Presbyterian, the adult transplant coordinating committee meets every Friday morning, chaired jointly by Yoshifumi Naka [MD, PhD], the transplant surgery program director and Donna Mancini [MD], a professor of medicine and director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Care, who oversees transplant cardiology. There are usually about 30 people around the table — transplant cardiologists, social workers, psychiatrists, infection specialists, neurologists, surgeons, transplant nurses and others. Most of the cardiologists are from Mancini’s section, but very occasionally an outside cardiologist may attend as well, to help advocate a listing for one of his patients.

Studies link pill to increased heart risks; but positives still outweigh negatives

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Hormonal birth control pills may increase markers of cardiovascular disease risk and the chance of developing cervical cancer, according to a handful of studies published and presented at medical meetings within the past month. Experts say, however, that while these studies help paint a more complete picture of the effects of this form of contraception, the positives still outweigh the negatives.
