10 Best Healthy Foods We Are Not Eating
Monday, December 17th, 2007When we shop at the market or go to a restaurant our first thought is to get food we like to eat and know. There are several foods out there that do not often make it into the shopping cart.
We always think that we don’t want that or don’t have time to fix that, but the reality is it doesn’t take any more time to prepare a well balanced and nutritious meal than going to the drive thru and getting something unhealthy when you calculate the time it takes to get through a line of ten cars or ten people in the restaurant.
Survey: Physicians falling short on professionalism
Sunday, December 16th, 2007Doctors agree on the basic tenets of medical professionalism, but they frequently fail to live up to those ideals in practice, according to a survey of more than 1,600 physicians in the Dec. 4 Annals of Internal Medicine.
Nearly all of the physicians surveyed agreed doctors should use medical resources appropriately, tell patients the truth, minimize disparities, see patients regardless of their ability to pay, maintain board certifications, evaluate peers’ care, avoid sex with patients, work on quality initiatives, disclose conflicts of interest, report impaired or incompetent physicians, and report medical errors.

Stricter requirements sought for relicensure as medical boards draft proposal
Sunday, December 16th, 2007State medical board leaders are exploring a new way to assure the public that physicians retain skills throughout their careers. But some doctors say the boards’ plan is just more busywork.
Board leaders are working on an initiative to expand the requirements for maintenance of licensure, a process in which doctors demonstrate continued competence at the time of relicensing. In most states, physicians can maintain their licenses just by having no disciplinary actions against them and by completing a minimum number of hours of continuing medical education.
Stronger, Larger Drinks Skew Drinking Reports
Sunday, December 16th, 2007Researchers may be underestimating alcohol consumption in the U.K. by failing to account for larger wine glasses in bars and increasingly stronger beers and ciders on the market, Medical News Today reported Dec. 13.
The U.K.’s Office of National Statistics has announced that it will updates its methods for calculating alcohol consumption, saying that past research may be underestimating alcohol use by 30 percent. In some cases, people may not be drinking a greater volume of alcoholic beverages, the drinks they are consuming are stronger. And in the case of wine, some pubs and bars have replaced the standard 125ml wine glass with larger goblets.

Acceptance of Overdose Antidote Grows, But Not in Bush Administration
Friday, December 14th, 2007More communities in the U.S. are distributing the opiate overdose antidote naloxone directly to addicts for emergency use, but the Bush administration continues to oppose such policies, the New York Times reported Dec. 11.
Naloxone works by blocking the opiate receptors in the brain; it has been used by emergency medical personnel since 1971 to prevent overdoses. In recent years, a number of communities have distributed the antidote directly to addicts and their friends and family members — a policy credited with reversing at least 1,000 overdoses.
