Sharing liability: A growing way to handle the risk
Monday, November 5th, 2007When Lancaster, Pa., neurosurgeon John A. Gastaldo, MD, saw his medical liability insurance premiums double through his regular carrier, he searched for alternatives. With a limited number of insurers doing business in the state five years ago, options were scarce.
Dr. Gastaldo, though, found a way. In 2003, he and some colleagues in the same predicament decided to self-insure by forming their own risk-retention group: Central Pennsylvania Physicians Risk Retention Group Inc.

MRSA By the Numbers
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — The rash of news reports about the superbug — Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, in the nationâs schools and hospitals had led to new worries about this deadly staph condition.
But how common is MRSA and who is most likely to get it? The federal Agency for Men’s healthcare Research and Quality has released some statistics that can help put the situation into perspective:
· About 368,600 people were treated for MRSA in U.S. hospitals in 2005.
· Of that number 1 out of every 20 died from the infection.

By Lindsay Braun, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent
ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The cost of living has taken on a whole new meaning. New research reveals the price of having a baby from the first prenatal exam to delivery, and everything in between, averages about $7,600 for an uncomplicated birth.
The total includes charges for hospital delivery, prenatal office visits, prescription medicines and other services associated with pregnancy. Data was collected over a four-year period to compile the final average. âThis is based on a survey, called the medical expenditure panel survey, so we use the data from that survey in a way to produce these estimates,â Stephen Machlin, statistician at the Agency for (more…)
Lawmakers at SCHIP impasse while funding ends in mid-November
Monday, October 29th, 2007Washington — Physician organizations expressed dismay and vowed to press forward after the House on Oct. 18 failed to override President Bush’s veto of a children’s health care bill.
The American Medical Association will continue to work with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to pass legislation reauthorizing the State Children’s Men’s health Insurance Program, said Board of Trustees Chair Edward L. Langston, MD.
The failed promise of prompt pay
Monday, October 29th, 2007Like all physicians, orthopedic surgeon Frank B. Kelly, MD, depends on steady cash flow to keep his office running. But Dr. Kelly, who directs the seven-doctor Forsyth Street Ambulatory Surgery Center in Macon, Ga., finds himself constantly battling private insurance companies to get payment for patient claims.
Even though Georgia law requires reimbursement within 15 days, Dr. Kelly says payment can take as long as six months. His financial situation gets so bad that he sometimes delays purchasing new equipment and sweats the months liability premiums come due. “You don’t make plans for capital expenditures unless you have the money in hand,” he says. “You cannot depend on being paid by an insurance company.”
Number, cost of vaccines spur budget dilemma
Monday, October 29th, 2007As of Jan. 1, 2008, the North Dakota Dept. of Health will stop struggling to pay for many of the vaccinations for all the state’s children and adolescents. The recommended list has gotten too long and too expensive, so officials are now asking insurance companies to pay to immunize the children on their rolls. If it is a covered service, they will be billed.
“When we gathered information on who was receiving vaccines, we discovered that nearly all ‘317 funds’ (a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention immunization grant) were subsidizing insurance companies. That didn’t seem to be right,” said State (more…)
Controversial insurance proposal on ballot in Washington state
Monday, October 29th, 2007Washington physicians and insurers are working against a new law regarding “bad-faith” handling of insurance claims.
On the Nov. 6 ballot, Referendum 67 will ask voters to reject or approve the statute. The law allows policyholders to sue their insurance companies for up to triple damages, plus legal fees, when insurers unreasonably turn down their claims. A state court would decide whether the claims denial was unreasonable and whether triple damages were warranted.
