Cautious optimism greets second year of stable, lower liability premiums
Monday, December 10th, 2007For the second straight year, medical liability insurance rates are easing nationwide, with nearly 84% of company-reported rates holding steady or dropping in 2007. That’s according to the latest Medical Liability Monitor survey, the largest of its kind to track how much insurance carriers charge physicians.
The report showed that more than half of premiums — 53% — did not change. That’s up from 47% of companies reporting that result in 2006. Another 31% of rates inched downward — 34% more than last year and roughly triple the number of decreases in 2005.

Should Primary Care Physicians Screen for Dementia?
Tuesday, December 4th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â Should patients without any dementia symptoms be screened for the condition just because theyâve reached a certain age?
In a new commentary, researchers from Indiana University School of Medicine, the University of Kent and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom say ânoâ because it could lead to negative consequences for the patient and for society. They explain, doctors should instead focus on warning signs of dementia.
âThere currently is no accurate screening test and we would be faced with an unacceptable number of false positives and false negatives,â Malaz Boustani, M.D., MPH, Indiana University School of Medicine, was quoted as saying. âIf we focus on dementia red flags we will be identifying individuals who will have a very high probability of having dementia and be able to focus our resources, including diagnostic testing, on these people.â
California regulators halt plan’s confidentiality agreements
Monday, November 26th, 2007California insurance regulators ordered the state Blues to stop using “confidentiality agreements” they said deprive physicians and hospitals of their rights to fair representation during contract negotiations. But doctors worry the cease-and-desist order the state Dept. of Managed Health Care issued Nov. 1 does not go far enough.
The mandatory agreements had given Blue Cross of California “sole and absolute discretion” as to whether doctors could use an attorney or consultant during contract discussions. Doctors and their representatives had to sign the document before negotiations began. The provisions also required that “any confidential information” generated during the process be returned to Blue Cross.
Maryland county idea offers access for uninsured
Monday, November 26th, 2007Washington — A wealthy Maryland county is working on a plan to provide at least basic health care to most of its 15,000 uninsured adults — a concept that could be reproduced in many counties around the United States, its proponents say.
The proposal, announced by Howard County leaders in October, would provide free primary, specialty and hospital care; personal care plans; and prescription drugs to enrollees. Individuals would pay monthly premiums ranging from $50 to $85, depending on income. These premiums would cover the bulk of the program’s $2.8 billion cost.

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â State Medicaid policies may be keeping many alcoholics from being treated with an inexpensive drug known to battle the condition.
Studies have shown the prescription drug naltrexone can help problem drinkers sober up â even if it is used without any counseling or other form of support. But a new study suggests many states have such restrictive drug policies alcoholics are unable to get or afford the medication.
âWe know from extensive research that only about 6 percent of people diagnosed as alcohol dependent are getting medication during their treatment and about a third of those who do not get medication cite cost or insurance as the key barrier,â study author Carolyn Heinrich, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was quoted as saying. âRevising certain state policies on prescription drugs is one way to address what is clearly a need for greater access to a clinically-proven and cost-effective treatment.â

Gift cards turn health care into stocking stuffer
Monday, November 19th, 2007Your patients may soon come for post-holiday visits not wearing new reindeer sweaters, but carrying gift cards that can help pay your fees.
Pittsburgh-based insurer Highmark says it has made giving the gift of good Men’s health possible with the introduction of its Men’s healthcare Gift Card. While hospitals and some practices already are in the gift-card market, analysts consider Highmark’s entry a watershed moment for the health care and gift card industries. Highmark is believed to be the first to issue a gift card that can be used nationally while also intended mostly for everyday health expenses.
