I didn’t actually get to see the episode, but from the buzz on other blogs and various news reports, it seems like it was quite a hit and in the process Kiva got some great publicity from Oprah. China is Choking

Great article in the NY Times about China’s pollution, a country where cancer is now the leading cause of death. As the article mentions, China unlike any of the industrialized nations will be forced to deal with this extremely serious problem while they are still a poor country. The catch 22 is that this may curb China’s development and hence also its future. This NY Times feature article includes additional audio and visual material. The new Bill Clinton book, Giving, features global health hero Paul Farmer and many others. He will be interviewed by Oprah on Sept. 4, 2007, the day his book on philanthropy and civic action is released. Medical metal detector finds lost orthopedic screws

Inspired by the device used to find lost coins in the sand, Johns Hopkins undergraduates have invented a small handheld metal detector to help doctors locate hidden orthopedic screws that need to be removed from patients’ bodies. The device emits a tone that rises in pitch as the surgeon moves closer to the metal screw. It also serves as a surgical tool to guide the removal of the hardware.

N.C. Launches Media Literacy Classes on Alcohol

Middle-school students in North Carolina will receive media-literacy education on alcohol ads and other media that promote underage drinking under a new state initiative, the Raleigh News & Observer reported Sept. 12.

The program, called “Media Ready,” features 10 lessons designed to be delivered in school and was unveiled this week by First Lady Mary Easley and acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu. The curriculum already is in use in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Chatham schools.

Nude Pose of Vanessa Hudgens, Good Girls Gone Bad

A nude photo is floating around the Web of Vanessa Hudgens, the 18-year-old star of “High School Musical 2″ and squeaky-clean “it” girl for the tweener set. Rep for Hudgens, 18, told tmz.com that the photo was taken privately. “It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public.” She wouldn’t say anything about who took the picture and how it slipped out onto the Internet.
