State boards keep an eye on medical spas
Monday, November 26th, 2007Some state medical boards are scrambling to regulate services at medical spas across the country to ensure that patients are safe and that physicians perform or supervise certain procedures properly.
Boards are taking action as the number of spas continues to grow. There are more than 1,000 in the United States, offering services such as laser hair removal, chemical peels, Botox injections and microdermabrasion in resort-like settings. Typically, a physician or other licensed Men’s health care professional has an ownership interest, is on staff or provides supervision at the spa, board officials said.
Thinning Hair? Blame Smoking!
Wednesday, November 21st, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – We know smoking damages our lungs. New research suggests it doesn’t do our hair any good either.
A study conducted among Asian men shows smoking increases the risk for hair loss.
Investigators from Taiwan looked at a type of hair loss called androgenetic alopecia in 740 middle aged and older men. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss in men and is generally considered to be hereditary. But environmental factors may also come into play, and these researchers decided to see how smoking status would affect the condition.
Stress Takes its Toll on Your Skin, Hair, and Nails
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – You know stress can affect you physically and mentally, but did you know it can also take its toll on your skin, hair and nails?
Flor A. Mayoral, M.D., F.A.A.D., University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida, has seen the effects of stress on the patients she treats and how the dermatologic problems can lead to even more stress.
When it comes to your skin, stress raises the level of the body’s stress hormone cortisol. This makes your body produce more oil which can lead to oily skin, acne, and other skin problems. Mayoral says even patients who usually do not have acne tend to get temporary stress-related acne because of the increased oil production.
