Report: Schools Can’t, Shouldn’t Shoulder Prevention Burden
Thursday, September 20th, 2007By Bob Curley
Most American kids receive some drug education in the classroom, but a new report contends that schools should not be relied upon to prevent early use of alcohol and other drugs and its consequences.
The report, “Preventing Education in America’s Schools: Findings and Recommendations from a Survey of Educators,” noted that 37 states require schools to teach students about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. However, “Teachers don’t have the time, training or other resources needed to do the job effectively, regardless of what the state-mandated standards say,” according to the report by Join Together and Communitas Online.

Viagra the New Oyster? Pill Also an Aphrodisiac, Study Shows
Friday, September 7th, 2007Viagra the New Oyster? Pill Also an Aphrodisiac, Study Shows
New research shows that not only does viagra help men overcome medical barriers to sex, it’s also an aphrodisiac.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison report this month that sildenafil, sold in the U.S. as viagra, increases the amount of oxytocin released by the pituitary gland.
Sometimes called the “love hormone” or “cuddle chemical,” oxytocin has been linked to sexual arousal and plays several important roles in social interactions and reproduction, including triggering uterine contractions and lactation. It is also released during orgasm.
Magnesium sulfate has more side effects than nifedipine as tocolytic
Friday, September 7th, 2007STANFORD, Calif. - The drug most commonly used to arrest preterm labor, magnesium sulfate, is more likely than another common treatment to cause mild to serious side effects in pregnant women, according to a study from researchers at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford University School of Medicine.
Their findings suggest that, since the effectiveness of the two drugs appears similar, physicians should consider side effects more strongly when choosing which drug to prescribe.
Newborns whose mothers had received magnesium sulfate were also more likely to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit than those whose mothers had received the alternative treatment, although the data do not offer an explanation for this finding and more research needs to be conducted to rule out other causes. What is clear is that currently available treatments for preterm labor are far from perfect.

As a stress urinary incontinence (SUI) treatment, along with future related urinary incontinence indications, the drug will continue to be marketed outside the US by Lilly but other treatments using duloxetine will remain under both firms.

Entecavir (hepatitis B drug) leads to cross-resistance with HIV drugs
Friday, September 7th, 2007Treating hepatitis B patients with the drug entecavir can cause those who are also infected with HIV to become resistant to two of the most important drugs in the anti-HIV arsenal, according to a new report in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Cross-resistance alarms raised earlier this year by Johns Hopkins researchers about a widely used antiviral therapy for hepatitis B liver infections have prompted swift treatment revisions by the drug’s maker and governmental agencies.
Findings by a team of Hopkins infectious disease specialists, to be published in the latest issue of The New England Journal of Medicine online June 21, showed that entecavir should not be used on its own in patients co-infected with HIV. Use of the drug led to cross-resistance to certain antiviral drugs used to treat the AIDS virus.
