Marker Identified to Find Cancer Stem Cells

Monday, December 10th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – One area of focus when it comes to cancer research is identifying the small number of cells within a tumor that are responsible for tumor growth. New research from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has made a big step in this type of research. Study authors have found a marker that can be used to identify cancer stem cells in breast tumor.

In the new research, investigators found that cells from normal and cancerous breast tissue that had high levels of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase activity or ALDH acted like breast stem cells. Out of the 577 tissue samples studied, those that expressed the specific form of ALDH1 had the worst outcomes. Researchers say this means this marker could be used as a good predictor of how aggressive a tumor is and how well patients will fare.

Common Household Chemical Connected to Breast Development

Friday, December 7th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – For the first time, research is connecting a common household chemical to breast development. The research focused on butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP). BBP is a plasticizer and is found in household items such as pipes, vinyl floor tiles and carpet backing.

Investigators from Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia and the University of Alabama in Birmingham fed lactating rats BBP and then their offspring absorbed it via breast milk. The offspring ingested a level of BBP that is equivalent to the Environmental Protection Agency’s safe dose limit.

Progesterone’s Effects on Alzheimer’s Disease

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Does progesterone protect against Alzheimer’s disease?

Previous research shows estrogen gives women some protection against Alzheimer’s. Researchers from the University of Southern California wanted to find out if progesterone could do the same.

The study found when progesterone is taken alone it only has limited benefits in mice with symptoms of Alzheimer’s. And when it’s taken with estrogen it can actually block some of estrogen’s benefits.

Researchers gave progesterone to female mice whose hormone production had been blocked to simulate menopause. The mice were genetically predisposed to develop Alzheimer’s-like disease, and had symptoms within months.

New Mammography Technique Better at Detecting Cancer

Friday, November 30th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – A new breast imaging technique could significantly reduce the number of women who have to go back for more tests after a routine screening mammography.

A new report from Emory University shows stereoscopic digital mammography reduced false-positive findings by 49 percent compared to standard digital mammography and reduced missed lesions by 40 percent.

1,093 patients at increased risk for breast cancer have enrolled in the trial as of July, 2007. Each had a standard digital mammography screening and a stereoscopic digital exam which were read by different radiologists.

Can Speeding up Cancer Cells Actually Stop Them?

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

By Lindsay Braun, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The key to stopping cancer may lie in one drug’s ability to first speed it up. By accelerating the activity of a cancer-promoting gene, it may be possible to send cancer cells into overdrive until they self-destruct.

Recent research reveals an FDA approved drug called bortezomib is able to selectively kill cancer cells by promoting an acceleration oncogene called c-MYC. By creating a heightened release of c-MYC, a reaction occurs in which a cell-killing protein called NOXA is released.

Race Plays a Role in Metastic Breast Cancer Pain

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

In a study that is among the first to examine the role of race in the pain experience of metastic breast cancer patients, it was discovered that on a scale of 1 to 10, non-white women reached a pain level of 7 or higher significantly sooner then white women.

Dr. Liana Castel of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and colleagues conducted the study which is published in the January 1, 2008 issue of CANCER. It included 1,124 women with metastic breast cancer and bone metastases. All of the participants received standard treatment in an international chemotherapy clinical trial conducted between October 1998 and January 2001. Women in 19 countries were involved. 82% of the Caucasians were from the United States.
