Birth Defects Depend on Vitamin A
Wednesday, November 21st, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) â Doctors have long known a derivative of vitamin A called retinoic acid plays a role in birth defects. Too much, and problems can occur â too little, and the same thing happens.
Now researchers from UC Irvine are helping to explain what happens in the developing embryo when retinoic acid gets out of whack. Their study, conducted in zebrafish embryos, shows proper balancing of retinoic acid depends both on an enzyme called cyp26a1 and proteins called fibroblast growth factors (FGFs).
Specifically, when retinoic acid levels become too high, cyp26a1 takes care of the excess, bringing levels back into the normal range. When they become too low, FGFs slow down the degrading of the acid, helping to maintain appropriate levels in the body.

New Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Guidelines
Monday, November 19th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — After a two-year review, new clinical standards for patients with cystic fibrosis are being released. Study authors say there are so many treatment options; they hope these guidelines will be useful for physicians.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a complex genetic disease affecting the lungs and other organs. A CF patient usually has a thick, sticky mucus that renders them incapable of fighting off infections. CF is always fatal, but the life expectancy has increased from a few years to 36 years.
For the new guidelines, researchers reviewed original research and systematic review literature from 1983 to 2006. They looked at the clinical efficacy and safety of more than seven types of treatments. They found the treatments that got the best grade included inhaled tobramycin and Dornase alfa. Inhaled tobramycin is an antibiotic used to improve lung function and Dornase alfa or DNase degrades the free DNA that accumulates in CF mucus ultimately improving lung function. Both of these treatments got an âAâ for patients with moderate to severe disease. Researchers also laid out guidelines for mild CF and made suggestions of what treatments physicians should not use.
Genes Connected to Breast Cancer Identified
Monday, November 19th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — You probably have not heard of the gene, SKP2, but you may be hearing more about it. In a new study, researchers from the University of Michigan say this gene could play an important role in breast cancer. The research reveals increased suppression of the gene SKP2 has been detected in nearly 50 percent of breast cancer cases.
Study authors write that one of the most fascinating parts of cancer biology is the interaction between cancer suppressor genes and oncogenes. Oncogenes are modified genes that are believed to cause cancer. Researchers say they found an interaction between SKP2 gene and the FOXP3 gene.

Cancer Drug Causes Heart Damage
Thursday, November 15th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — New research shows that the anticancer drug ZD6126 can lead to heart damage in rats. However, researchers say that by combining the cancer drug with a blood pressure medication can stop the heart damage without affecting the antitumor effect.
Cancer drugs such as ZD6126 target blood vessels that feed a tumor. These types of drugs are associated with cardiovascular problems including high blood pressure or heart attack.
Researchers of AstraZeneca in the U.K., investigated how these adverse effects happen in rats. They studied the ratsâ heart rates and blood pressure and measured a biomarker that indicated damage to the heart. They found the drug increased the blood pressure and heart rate which was associated with a higher level of the biomarker and increased death of heart muscle tissue. However, they found that these cardiac side effects can be treated by adding a blood pressure medication without changing the effect of the cancer drug.
