Thursday, October 4th, 2007
ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — New research shows young American Indians who are identified as being part of a racial group they donât belong to is not only a source of contention, itâs also a source of emotional stress.

Diabetics’ Perception of Quality of Life, Care
Thursday, September 27th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — How do diabetics rate their quality of life and complications from the disease?
A new report from the University of Chicago reveals many patients with diabetes report the inconvenience and discomfort of their care — especially the multiple daily insulin injections — has as much impact on their quality of life as the burden of intermediate complications like angina, diabetic nerve damage or kidney damage.
Researchers interviewed 701 adult, type-2 diabetics who went to Chicago area clinics between May 2004 and May 2006. They asked patients their preferences in a series of trade-offs — for example, âwould you rather have six years in perfect (more…)
Cardiac Rehab Significantly Underused
Thursday, September 27th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Cardiac rehabilitation can reduce disability and prolong life, but many patients may be missing out on the benefits.
New research from Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., reveals fewer than one-in-five (18.7 percent) patients get cardiac rehab services after a heart attack or coronary bypass surgery. But, bypass patients are much more likely (31.0 percent) than heart attack patients (13.9 percent) to receive rehabilitation.
The study evaluated Medicare claims data from 267,427 men and women age 65 and older who survived at least 30 days after being released from a hospital following a heart attack or coronary bypass surgery in 1997.
Breath Test on the Horizon for Diabetics
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — The end of finger-prick blood tests may be in sight for patients with diabetes. Breath-analysis tests may be a new non-invasive way to monitor blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes.
New research at the University of California, Irvine, reveals children with type-1 diabetes have a heightened concentration of methyl nitrates in the air they exhale when they are hyperglycemic. The extra amount of methyl nitrate can be detected by a chemical analysis done through a breath sample. Traditionally, hyperglycemia was only detectable by blood sample.

Maternal Depression and Stressed Out Kids
Thursday, September 20th, 2007
(Ivanhoe Newswire) — New research reveals a history of depression in mothers along with a type of parenting style called “maternal overcontrol” increases stress hormones in their infants.
Previous studies have suggested pregnant teenagers are at increased risk for depression. Researchers from University Men’s health Network in Toronto wanted to know if the behavior of teen moms was related to future psychiatric or behavioral problems in their children.
The researchers measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol in 212 four-month-old infants of young moms before and after a brief, mild stressor caused by arm restraint.
