Chronic Kidney Disease on the Rise

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Americans worry a lot about their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, thanks to awareness campaigns highlighting concerns over hypertension and diabetes. They should also be worried about their kidney function, report the authors of a new study. Researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine and elsewhere find chronic kidney disease is on the rise in the United States. In 1988-1994, the condition affected 10 percent of the population. By 1999-2004 that figure stood at 13 percent. What’s more, many people with the disease aren’t even aware they have it.

Stress Increases Skin Infections

Monday, November 5th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — You know stress can affect your Men’s health as it weakens the immune system, but how exactly does it happen?

New research from the University of California, San Francisco finds a mechanical link in mice between psychological stress and the increased risk of skin infections.

The study shows mice put in conditions of psychological stress are more susceptible to group A Streptococcus skin infections than normal mice. Researchers say psychological stress disrupts the skin’s antimicrobial barrier – essentially stressed-out skin loses its antimicrobial defense mechanism.

Anxiety Linked to Sleep Problems

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) –When your stress causes anxiety it can take its toll on your sleep.

A new report from Finland finds anxiety from stressful life situations is more likely to cause sleep problems for at least the first six months after the event. The study measured the effects of stressful events such as death or illness in the family, divorce, financial difficulty, and violence. Participants’ risk of anxiety was measured at the beginning of the study.

Results show being at risk for anxiety and having a negative life event were strongly linked to sleep problems. Men at risk for anxiety had sleep disturbance odds 3.11 times higher if they had a severe life event within six months. Those not at risk for anxiety had odds of 1.13 for sleeping problems. And for men and women at risk for anxiety the odds ratio for sleep disturbance up to six months after divorce was 2.05 compared to 1.47 for those not at risk for anxiety.

After Katrina: Victim’s Mental Health Worsening

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Two years later, the ravages of Hurricane Katrina are still seen, not just in destroyed property, but also in the minds of the storm’s victims. Harvard researchers are reporting mental illnesses are on the rise in people who lived in the areas hit by Katrina.

Normally, the prevalence of mental disorders decreases as time passes after a disaster. Researchers conclude Katrina victims may be different because the problems caused by the storm continue today; hundreds of thousands of people are still displaced and cannot return home, and many schools and businesses remain closed.

Job Stress Ups Risk for Second Heart Attack

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — People who have had one heart attack have good reason to chill out on the job. Stressing out over work can lead to another one.

That’s the key finding from Canadian researchers who studied nearly 1,000 men and women between ages 35 and 59 who returned to work after suffering a first heart attack. All were followed for about six years. Over that time, 111 had another non-fatal heart attack, 82 were diagnosed with unstable angina, and 13 died from a second attack.

People who reported lots of job stress were twice as likely as others to have another heart attack or other coronary heart disease event. The result held true even after the findings were adjusted to take other heart disease risk factors into account. Job stress was equally dangerous for men and women as well, and no differences were seen according to age, marital status, educational levels, economic status, or the level of support the person was receiving at work.
