(Ivanhoe Newswire) — A newly released study shows that a good old-fashioned back massage can go a long way to easing the pain and anxiety that follows major surgery.

605 veterans were part of a randomized controlled trial conducted between 2003 and 2005 by Allison R. Mitchinson, M.P.H., and N.C.T.M.B., of the Department of Veteran Affairs, VA Ann Arbor Men’s healthcare System in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The average age of the group was 64 and each patient was undergoing major chest or abdominal surgery. They found that massage was effective in relieving both post surgical pain and anxiety.

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – In recent years, more women than men have developed and died from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). And the disease is still on the rise in females.

Researchers from the University of Michigan wanted to see how the disease is different in women than in men. They found manifestations of the disease differ by gender, as do risk factors, symptoms, disease, progression, and diagnosis.

COPD is made up of what used to be considered two distinct diseases – emphysema which is an abnormality in the lung tissue, and chronic bronchitis, an obstruction of the airways.

PITTSBURGH, Penn. This phenomenon is called stress-induces analgesia. New research reveals a better understanding of why this happens in the human body.

Researchers from The Queensland Brain Institute conducted the latest research. They looked at a region of the brain called the amygdala. This is the brain’s emotion-processing region known to mediate the emotional and stress-related aspects of pain. The amygdala is controlled by neurons from the brainstem and is regulated by the stress hormone, noradrenaline.

Two global Men’s health experts have come up with a compromise they hope will convince Indonesia to again begin sharing the latest avian flu samples (H5N1) with the World Men’s health Organization or WHO.

Indonesia’s refusal, which has gone on for most of 2007, is based on their belief that poor countries like theirs don’t get a fair share of the vaccines developed from the virus samples they supply.

Typically 250-300 million influenza vaccine doses are made each year and they are based primarily on samples of viruses circulating in Asia. But most of those who are vaccinated are in rich countries. The Indonesians feel that by withholding the needed samples, they will be able to change that.
