Compromise Offered to Break Flu Vaccine Impasse
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
Two global Men’s health experts have come up with a compromise they hope will convince Indonesia to again begin sharing the latest avian flu samples (H5N1) with the World Men’s health Organization or WHO.
Indonesiaâs refusal, which has gone on for most of 2007, is based on their belief that poor countries like theirs donât get a fair share of the vaccines developed from the virus samples they supply.
Typically 250-300 million influenza vaccine doses are made each year and they are based primarily on samples of viruses circulating in Asia. But most of those who are vaccinated are in rich countries. The Indonesians feel that by withholding the needed samples, they will be able to change that.
Memory Loss May Not Mean Loss of Sensitivity to Others
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
Contrary to current thinking, people that have lost their personal memories due to a brain injury may still be able to understand the feelings and intentions of others. It is commonly believed that such understanding is based on our own memories. Itâs known as the âTheory of Mindâ and it is thought to be the basis of our ability to socialize.
But a new study challenges that thinking. It indicates that severe loss of what is called âautobiographical episodic memoryâ does not necessarily alter someoneâs capacity to assess the mental state of others.
Mismatched Prostate Cancer Treatments Are More Common Than Expected
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
More than one third of men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the early stages end up making medically inappropriate treatment choices. A new study reports that these treatment âmismatchesâ could likely be a result of a patientâs unwillingness to discuss pre-existing conditions with their doctor.
The study was led by Dr. James Talcott of the Center for Outcomes Research at Massachusetts General Hospital. âProstrate cancer patients experience the same fears and hard decisions as all cancer patients do but prostate cancer treatment directly affects very personal things that most people arenât comfortable talking about â urinary, bowel and sexual function,â says Talbot.

Can Speeding up Cancer Cells Actually Stop Them?
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
By Lindsay Braun, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent
ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The key to stopping cancer may lie in one drugâs ability to first speed it up. By accelerating the activity of a cancer-promoting gene, it may be possible to send cancer cells into overdrive until they self-destruct.
Recent research reveals an FDA approved drug called bortezomib is able to selectively kill cancer cells by promoting an acceleration oncogene called c-MYC. By creating a heightened release of c-MYC, a reaction occurs in which a cell-killing protein called NOXA is released.

Pedometers Motivate People to Walk More
Thursday, November 29th, 2007
A review of various studies shows that people who keep track of their steps with pedometers are motivated to walk more. According to an article in the Nov. 21, 2007 JAMA, pedometer users walk an extra mile every day and show decreases in body mass index and blood pressure.
Researchers, led by Dr. Dena M. Bravata, of Stanford University, reviewed 26 studies with 2,491 participants, all women, between the ages of 49 and 85. Over an average 18-week period, pedometer users increased their physical activity by 26.9% over baseline. The key factor in the increased activity of the pedometer users is having a step goal.
