Teen Impaired Driving Plateaus

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

After several years of declines, the rate of impaired driving among high-school seniors has leveled off at about 30 percent, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

NIDA researchers reported that after falling from 35 percent to 31 percent between 2001 and 2003, the percentage of seniors who said they had driven a car within the past two weeks after drinking heavily or using illicit drugs — or rode with a driver who had done so — has remained at about 30 percent through 2006.

Study author Patrick O’Malley noted that 13 percent of seniors reported driving under the influence of marijuana, and 10 percent said they had driven after consuming five or more alcoholic drinks

Huffing and Suicide Related, New Study Suggests

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

“Huffing,” or inhaling volatile chemicals to get high, is associated with increases in suicidal thought and suicide attempts among adolescents, according to researchers at the University of Denver.

Researchers Stacey Freedenthal and Jeffrey M. Jenson of the university’s Graduate School of Social Work and colleagues studied a group of incarcerated youth and found that 33 percent reported huffing, 25 percent had attempted suicide, and 58 percent reporting having suicidal thoughts.

Moreover, suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts were more prevalent among those whose use of inhalants was higher, especially among girls. Researchers said huffing and suicide were connected, although they could not say which came first.

New Cancer Drug Showing Promise

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — A new cancer drug may be able to treat Ewing’s Sarcoma and other sarcoma tumors without all the negative side effects seen with standard treatment.
And early trials suggest the drug may be effective in shrinking the cancers as well.

Ewing’s Sarcoma affects about 300 people in the United States each year, most of them young people. In 20 percent to 30 percent of the patients, the cancer is only diagnosed after it has spread to other parts of the body. Survival among these patients runs around 25 percent to 30 percent.

New findings based on a phase 1 study conducted in 34 adult patients are giving people new hope. The overall purpose of the study was to find out if the treatment could be safely administered. Researchers found tumors stopped growing in nine of the patients after they began receiving the drug. Common side effects of cancer treatment, such as low blood counts, hair loss, nausea and vomiting, and increased infection risk, were either low or nonexistent in the patients.

Hunger … It’s All in Your Brain!

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — The key to losing weight could be in your brain. A new study shows the hormone leptin plays a role in signaling hunger and could be a new target for treating obesity.

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles determined brain circuits involved in hunger are influenced by leptin. Previous studies showed adding leptin to the diet produced moderate weight loss in some obese patients, reportedly by inhibiting hunger and promoting feelings of being full.

Some individuals have a leptin deficiency disorder due to a rare genetic mutation of the Ob gene, located on chromosome seven in humans. These people have a constant need for food, resulting in severe obesity. Previous studies on these individuals showed leptin replacement normalized their eating behavior.

By Lindsay Braun, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — The cost of living has taken on a whole new meaning. New research reveals the price of having a baby from the first prenatal exam to delivery, and everything in between, averages about $7,600 for an uncomplicated birth.

The total includes charges for hospital delivery, prenatal office visits, prescription medicines and other services associated with pregnancy. Data was collected over a four-year period to compile the final average. “This is based on a survey, called the medical expenditure panel survey, so we use the data from that survey in a way to produce these estimates,” Stephen Machlin, statistician at the Agency for (more…)

Pinpointing Osteoarthritis

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Painful joints caused by osteoarthritis may have their origin in something other than cartilage lining the ends of limb bones.

While doctors have long believed osteoarthritis stems from a breakdown of this cartilage, British researchers suggest the problem may also be coming from inflammation in another type of joint structure called an enthesis. An enthesis is a place where the ligament or tendon attaches to the bone.

They arrived at that conclusion after studying a structure they dubbed the “synovial-entheseal complex” (SEC) in ligament and tendon attachment samples taken from 60 people who had died. SECs are believed to contribute to the inflammation that leads to osteoarthritis. The average age of the subjects at death was 84.
