In the midst of Milan’s all-important Fashion Week, the picture that is turning heads in Italy is a shocking one. FBI: Violent Crime Up, Property Crime Down

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program said that homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults increase about 2 percent last year, but that the property-crime rate fell 1.9 percent, the Los Angeles Times reported Sept. 25.

The overall crime rate is at its lowest point in 30 years, and some experts downplayed the increase in violent crime. “To some extent, the rise that we saw this year and last has been because we’re at a relative low point,” said James Alan Fox, a criminal-justice professor at Northeastern University. “When you’re that low, the only way to go is up.”

The first cervical vertebra, or atlas, articulates with the base of the skull, allowing nodding movements. The second, the axis, rotates around a peg connecting into the atlas and allows turning of the head.

U.S. Prison Population Still Growing, But Slower

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

U.S. prisons now house a record 2.1 million inmates, but a U.S. Census report says that prison growth began to level off during the early 2000s, the Washington Post reported Sept. 27.

The 2006 census data in the American Community Survey showed that the prison population grew 4 percent since 2000, a far more modest increase that the 77-percent growth between 1990 and 2000. Experts generally agree that tough drug sentencing laws led to the spike in prison populations during the 1990s.
