Reported Teen Marijuana Use Declines, Abuse of Prescription Drugs Rises, Survey Finds

Fewer adolescents are telling federal researchers that they use marijuana, but the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported that most indicators of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use remain relatively unchanged from 2005.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) unveiled the survey results on Sept. 6, with federal officials touting a 25-percent reported decline in marijuana use among male youths between 2002 and 2006 but fretting over the 2.2 million new nonmedical users of prescription drugs, including narcotic painkillers. Most users of prescription drugs for recreational reasons reported getting the drugs free from friends or family members.
Senate Health Committee Passes Groundbreaking Pharmaceutical Drug Safety Legislation
Friday, June 8th, 2007SACRAMENTO—The Senate Health Committee today passed SB 1683, the Pharmaceutical Drug Right-to-Know Act. The bill, authored by Senator Jack Scott (Alta Dena) and sponsored by CALPIRG, would require drug companies to release the results of all their health studies for every drug sold in California.
Mass. Man Charged in Teen’s Alcohol Death
Wednesday, June 6th, 2007An Easthampton, Mass., man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after allegedly buying alcohol for his daughter and her friends, one of whom died after drinking, the Boston Globe reported Sept. 14.
Timothy E. Parent, 46, pled not guilty to the manslaughter charge and two counts of procuring alcohol for a minor. Police say Parent bought a 1.75-liter bottle of vodka for his 15-year-old daughter, who drank it with friend Alexis E. Garcia, also 15. Garcia was later found dead in her bathtub; authorities ruled that she died from drowning and alcohol poisoning, with a blood-alcohol content of between .28 percent and .33 percent.

Marijuana Use Tops Cigarette Smoking Among Canadian Youth
Tuesday, June 5th, 2007The average Canadian youth smokes their first cigarette at age 12, takes their first drink at 13, and tries illicit drugs at age 14, according to the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse (CCSA).
The CanWest News Service reported Sept. 5 that a report entitled Substance Abuse in Canada: Youth in Focus also found that 83 percent of 15- to 24-year-olds either were current drinkers or had consumed alcohol within the previous year.
