Painkillers, Other Prescription Drugs Causing More Deaths, Injuries

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

A “substantially growing number of patients” are being injured or killed by the prescription drugs they are taking under doctors’ orders, according to a new report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.

Reuters reported Sept. 10 that researcher Thomas Moore and colleagues said that reports of such deaths and injuries have more than doubled between 1998 and 2005, largely due to problems with painkillers and immune-system boosters.

ACE Inhibitors Help Marfan Syndrome

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) may get some much needed relief of their heart complications by taking an ACE inhibitor.

Preliminary research from Australia shows the ACE inhibitor perindopril combined with a beta-blocker may help reduce aortic stiffness and dilation associated with MFS.

MFS is a hereditary disorder that primarily affects the body’s connective tissues. It is often characterized by excessive bone elongation, joint flexibility and abnormalities of the eye and cardiovascular system. The most serious complications are progressive aortic dilation and rupture — the most common cause of premature death.

Women Less Likely than Men to Receive ICDs

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) — Women do not get the same treatment as men to protect them from sudden cardiac death — the leading cause of death in the United States.

A new report shows men are about two- to three-times more likely than women to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to prevent sudden cardiac death.

The risk of sudden cardiac death overall increases with age and is higher in men than in women but the sex difference narrows and eventually disappears after age 85 years. Research has shown ICDs to be effective in preventing sudden cardiac death. Medicare coverage of the devices has expanded but many eligible patients still do not receive them.

Biopsy Scoring Gives Better Prognosis Indication

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

By Kate McHugh, Ivanhoe Men’s health Correspondent

ORLANDO, Fla. (Ivanhoe Newswire) — New research uncovers a more effective way to predict risk of prostate cancer recurrence.

Of the more than 218,000 American men diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, most will undergo a biopsy to determine their Gleason score — a number from two to 10 reflecting how likely it is the cancer will grow and spread quickly. But adding another element, known as a tertiary pattern, may give doctors a better indication of how the disease will progress.
