Photo Essay: The End of Polio

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Ever since I saw the “Migrations: Humanity in Transition” exhibit I have been a huge fan of Sebastiao Salgado (UN bio). He has now taken his skills to the global health realm to document the largest public health initiative in history. Some of the pictures can be viewed online and for those in Atlanta, “his photographs documenting the eradication efforts can be viewed by the public in the Global Health Odyssey on the CDC campus at 1600 Clifton Road on August 27, 2007 through January 4, 2008.” Visit www.endofpolio.org for a preview of the photos (one sample below).

DEA Says Many Terrorist Groups Raise Money Via Drugs

Monday, December 11th, 2006

Baltimore – In a survey of more than one thousand infertility patients with frozen embryos, 60 percent of patients report that they are likely to donate their embryos to stem cell research, a level of donation that could result in roughly 2000 to 3000 new embryonic stem cell lines. Researchers from Duke University and Johns Hopkins University report the startling findings in the July 6, 2007 issue of Science.

Flaw exposed in new Medicare ID system

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

Washington — Thousands of physicians could see Medicare claims delays or rejections because of discrepancies between the program’s new identification system and doctors’ old ID numbers, said organizations representing physicians and practice managers.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services instructed carriers starting Sept. 4 to no longer accept claims from physicians whose new ID numbers could not be matched with their older “legacy” numbers in a “crosswalk” file designed to link the old and new IDs. Medicare is in the process of transitioning to a system in which all physicians who submit electronic claims to payers are identified by a national provider identifier, a 10-digit number that eventually will replace UPINs and all other identifiers.

Report: Connect Kids to Communities to Prevent Crime

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Juvenile-justice systems need to involve communities and family members in connecting youth to mentors, jobs, and community services to prevent crime and addiction, according to a new report from the Reclaiming Futures project.

The report, Moving Toward Equal Ground, suggests ways to improve treatment services and outcomes in the juvenile-justice system. “Families and community members have the right to be involved and need to be involved in all aspects of helping youth in the justice system who struggle with alcohol and drug use,” said Laura Nissen, Ph.D., national program director of Reclaiming Futures. “They can shape the way the system treats these youth, and provide the positive social opportunities needed to keep them out of trouble.”

Can Hormones Stop Aging?

In the last decade there has been a lot of interest in the role of hormones and aging.

The neuroendocrine theory suggests that it is the decline of the nervous and endocrine systems and lessening of their ability to regulate and integrate the body’s key activities could be one of the factors that may contribute to aging.
